Dispatch Depression

From my article published in Vashi Times Newspaper

“Depression is the inability to construct a future”- Rollo May

We all look after our physical health meticulously. But how many percents of people treat mental health equally? Clinical depression is becoming common among Indians. According to Apollo Hospital statistics, there are more than 10 million cases per year in India. There is a certain kind of exhaustion that exerts in a depressed mind. It’s the feeling of vicious that surrounds and haunts the mind.

Being a biotechnologist, I have studied certain cases of depression. According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIH), depression is a common but serious mood disorder. It holds major changes in things that we do on a daily basis. It can be as simple as handling daily activities, sleeping or eating. Even though there are different forms of depression and that depends on the symptoms, which is present for more than two weeks should be taken care of. People don’t feel comfortable approaching the therapist and its majorly due to mortification on what people will think about. We should give a thought on ourselves before anticipating what others will do. It’s only you who can help yourself. Remember what we used to study, “A person is healthy when he is physically and mentally fit”. Maintaining the balance of physical and mental health is a service that we can give to our body and soul. If you feel dejected due to things that don’t happen according to your plan that is part and parcel of life. Don’t compare it to feeling depressed which is miserable and often leads to thinking the state is irreformable.

There are therapies and medication which can help cure depression to a larger extent. And then it’s you who can pull yourself out of the blue. It was in 2017, I suffered from mild depression and that went for a few months until the symptoms became obvious. The reason cannot be put into words because it’s the feeling of despair. I believed the condition of hopelessness in me can be only cured by changing my own thoughts. It is then I started involving myself in all those activities which I used to rejoice once. When you’re involved in many activities, your mind becomes bustling with ideas. Hence, it will not leave space for dispensable thoughts. There can be a phase in your life which will not go according to your plans. This particularly can leave you with depressing thoughts since its part of the journey. Feeling low on some days is perfectly alright. We all are human’s with emotions and its not necessarily important that we feel the same on all the days. Failure and success will across the paths of life but getting stuck in one place will definitely harm you. Paralyzing your thoughts in your psyche will only give a temporary feeling of satisfaction. But if you find the root causes of the problems then it becomes much simpler to refine them.

“Truly, it is in the darkness that one finds the light, so when we are in sorrow, then this light is nearest of all to us.”- Meister Eckhart

There are many foundations where they provide a helpline number and therapist to contact them to seek some help. You shouldn’t hesitate to pursue these helping hands. There is always light ahead of the tunnel. The night has to give up for the day. Nothing remains permanent unless you decide to change it for the better. A substantial amount of changes, when done to your lifestyle, can cut down many negative thoughts. So take a peaceful walk in your garden, paint your emotions with colours, write anything which brings a smile to your face, read your books, listen to music or just something which occupies your mind for good reasons. Basically, feed your soul with the food of wonderful thoughts. It will not only help you but also people who you’re connected within your life. Another amazing technique to keep mind peaceful is meditation. Meditation has some extraordinary power to cure many illnesses. A study conducted by Harvard Medical School, in mindfulness meditation, has commented on the changes in brain activity who have shown meditation to be effective.

Lastly, I want to conclude this article with a poem. The poem was jotted down when I was overcoming depression. It’s all about how depression feels like.

My Soul is in Dejection

I begged you to let me sleep
I requested you-
“Do not follow me”
Those sleepless nights
I cried
Many emotional breakdowns
But you enjoyed my miserable state
No pills cured
Only contemplating scenes
You made me a different person
I stopped talking to anyone
I beg you to leave me….
